Dear ,
Bóthar, the international aid organisation working to end world hunger and poverty, is offering interested participants a unique opportunity to walk with a purpose this winter…through the Austrian Alps. The event, announced today at the organisation’s office in Sligo, will take place in mid January 2009.
Pat McCarrick, Fundraising Projects Director with Bóthar, says, “People should think of this as an alternative to a traditional skiing holiday. We hope the event will be attractive to those who would love a winter sports challenge but who feel they are not best-suited to skiing or snowboarding. This event is perfect for keen walkers or trekkers and, of course, participants will be helping Bóthar help those in need through individual fundraising for the challenge.”
Snow walking is less demanding and needs no specialised equipment. Trekking will take place on cleared mountain paths either between villages or on circular routes up in the foothills of the Tyrol. There will also be a day left aside for some snowshoe walking on deep snow.
Bóthar have discovered that challenge experiences such as this create strong bonds between like-minded people, who commit themselves to a physical challenge for the greater reward of giving to those in need. “People meet on an event like this with a common purpose and the result for all concerned is often amazing” Mr. McCarrick said at the recent launch of the project.
